Frequently asked questions

How can hypnosis help in natural childbirth?
Fear of childbirth causes stress and tension for a birthing mother. In turn stress and tension cause the release of stress hormones (cathechlomines). When this hormone is present it can interrupt the natural process of birth, making it uncomfortable and slower than necessary.

When is the ideal time to take a hypnobirth course?
Ideally between 26 and 32 weeks. The course can be taken later than this but it leaves less time to practice. The benefit would still be felt at any time however.

How many couples are on each course?
Courses are for small groups, allowing for a personal service with lots of time available for individual feedback and practice.

Will hypnobirthing allow a pain free birth?
Hypnobirthing does not make any guarantees of a pain free labour but 80% of mothers report satisfaction with the Hypnobirth programme for providing a comfortable birth

Does my husband or partner need to attend?
Yes, or birth partner. Techniques for relaxation, massage and deepening are all taught to the birth partner who is both an important support for mum and an advocate for her needs too.

I've heard of other hypnobirthing courses. Which method do you use?
All hypnobirthing methods use the same basic method: they look at the physiology of birth and the impact of negative emotions. The techniques used will be slightly different. Some are based on an American model. I trained under Judith Flood who is a qualified hypnotherapist, hypnobirthing practitioner and registered midwife within the UK. I have to provide evidence of effective teaching and evaluation to maintain our registration. I am also fully insured and an experienced  midwife.  I feel I am uniquely positioned to support you through the birthing process.

Can I use hypnobirthing wherever I have my baby?
You will be able to use the techniques whether you have a hospital or home birth. The skills learnt can be used after birth and can help both of you  for stress that occurs in life.

What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable and practical clothes.

Will I have to practice ?
If you practice the techniques learnt in the sessions at home, it will get easier to relax, breathe and visualise and therefore be more effective in labour.
